Course Description

Composer Richard Strauss said, “The human voice is the most beautiful instrument of all, but it is the most difficult to play.” We’ll trace the history of Western opera, from its beginnings in 16th-century Italy to the present day. We’ll explore how different composers developed and expanded operatic style, highlighting their respective areas of innovation and focus, using the human voice as the primary instrument. You will see and hear some of the greatest moments in opera history: thrilling arias, duets and ensembles sung by the greatest artists of our time.
